Virginia Drive-Ins
Virginia has seven open drive-in theaters, with most located in the western half of the state along the mountains and valleys west of the Blue Ridge. The season typically runs from March or April through October.
View All Drive-InsThe Family Drive-in in Stephens City is the closest option to the Washington, D.C. metro area, sitting in the Shenandoah Valley. After briefly closing at the end of 2025, new ownership stepped in and the two-screen theater is reopening in spring 2026. Further south in the Valley, Hull's Drive-in in Lexington is one of the few nonprofit drive-ins in the country, saved from closure by a community fundraising campaign and still run by volunteers.
The Goochland Drive-In Theater in Hadensville is the only drive-in on the eastern side of the state, about 40 miles west of Richmond. It opened in 2009 and added a second screen in 2018. Deeper into rural Virginia, the Fork Union Drive-In in Fluvanna County is reopening in spring 2026 after being dark since 2013.
In the southwest, four drive-ins dot the mountain region. The Park Place Drive-in in Marion features mini golf and an arcade alongside its screen. The Central Drive-in in Norton runs one of the longest seasons in the state, from March through November. The Moonlite Drive-In Theatre in Abingdon, a National Register site dating to 1949, reopened in July 2025 after a full renovation with a 4K laser projector.
