Drive-Ins Near Juneau

Juneau is home to Alaska's only drive-in, a small pop-up operation run by the Gold Town Nickelodeon cinema in the state capital.

The Gold Town Nickelodeon Drive-In launched in 2020 with a portable screen set up near Egan Drive and Whittier Street. It fits about 50 cars per screening, with sound broadcast on FM radio. The schedule is limited by Alaska's extreme daylight patterns. During summer, Juneau gets close to 18 hours of sunlight, pushing screenings to the very end of the season when nights get dark enough. Most shows happen in late summer and early fall.

The indoor Gold Town Nickelodeon theater runs a mix of indie and mainstream films, and the drive-in extension carries the same programming. For a city accessible only by air or water, having any drive-in at all is unusual. It is the northernmost drive-in in the United States and one of the smallest, but the novelty of watching a movie outdoors in Alaska's capital draws a crowd whenever it runs.
