South Dakota Drive-Ins

South Dakota has five operating drive-in theaters, giving the state one of the highest drive-in-per-capita ratios in the country. Seasons generally run from May through September across the open prairie.

The oldest is the Hilltop Drive-in near Gregory, showing movies on Highway 18 since 1946 with room for about 240 cars. In north-central South Dakota, the Pheasant Drive-in in Mobridge sits along the Missouri River and is one of the few drive-ins anywhere that still offers traditional in-car speakers alongside FM radio. The same operator has been running it since 1976.

The Pheasant City Drive-in north of Redfield on Highway 281 and the Midway Drive-in in Miller both date to 1953 and continue to show movies on summer weekends. Further south, the Winner Drive-in has been in operation since 1950 and runs a short season from late May through mid-August.

Two former drive-ins have closed in recent years. Roy's Black Hills Twin in Hermosa, once the only drive-in in the Black Hills area, did not reopen after the 2022 season and the property was listed for sale. The Starlite in Mitchell also shut down after 2022 following low attendance.
