Illinois Drive-Ins

Illinois has nine operating drive-in theaters across 12 screens, spread from the Chicago suburbs down to the farmland near the Indiana border. Two sit along Historic Route 66 — the Rt 66 Skyview in Litchfield and the Route 66 Twin in Springfield — and ChiTown Drive-In is one of the few urban drive-ins in the country, running year-round in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood.

Most Illinois drive-ins are seasonal, opening in March or April and closing by October or November. The twin-screen theaters in Gibson City, Springfield, and Belleville all run double features, while the single-screen venues in Sterling, Earlville, McHenry, and Newton focus on weekend showings. Belleville's Skyview serves the St. Louis metro area and holds around 700 cars, making it the largest in the state. Sterling's Midway Drive-In has been running continuously since 1950 and hosts an annual Dusk to Dawn HorrorFest each September.
