Alaska Drive-Ins
Alaska has one drive-in theater, a pop-up operation run by the Gold Town Nickelodeon cinema in Juneau.
View All Drive-InsThe Gold Town Nickelodeon Drive-In launched in 2020 with a portable screen set up near the downtown theater on Egan Drive. It fits about 50 cars and broadcasts sound on FM radio. Movies typically start in late summer and early fall, when Juneau's daylight hours have shortened enough for outdoor projection to work. Mid-summer screenings aren't practical this far north, where the sun barely sets from May through July.
Alaska's climate and extreme seasonal daylight make permanent drive-ins difficult to sustain, which is why the Gold Town operates as a seasonal pop-up rather than a traditional fixed-screen venue. It's the only drive-in of any kind currently operating in the state.
